To Our Citizens
Citizen,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to share my thoughts on the ongoing discussion surrounding the legalization of all drugs, an issue that has significant implications for our society.
Recently, I participated in a dialogue about this topic, and I believe there are key points that should be considered in our approach to drug policy.
Firstly, I contend that legalizing all drugs could shift the responsibility of managing drug addiction from the criminal justice system to individual communities. This shift would allow for the development of more effective addiction treatment and prevention programs tailored to the needs of our citizens.
While I am aware that Oregon has decriminalized all drugs, I understand that the outcomes have been mixed. Some argue that this has led to increased problems; however, I believe it is essential to allow time for the system to adjust. Immediate success should not be expected simply by legalizing drugs. Instead, we must focus on creating a robust framework to support individuals struggling with addiction.
In addition, I recognize the role of support groups like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) in helping individuals achieve sobriety. However, I advocate for a broader approach that does not rely solely on the criminal justice system. By empowering communities to take an active role in addressing addiction, we can foster a more supportive environment for those in need.
Furthermore, legalizing drugs would enable the marketplace to adapt and regulate the industry more effectively than the current situation, where drug dealers have control. This shift could help mitigate the harm and unnecessary fatalities that arise from illegal drug trafficking.
I urge you to consider these points as you continue to address drug policy in our state. Discussions around drug legalization are critical to understanding how we can create a healthier, safer community for all.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I appreciate your service and commitment to our constituents.
Sincerely,
Amy Rebbecca Cashman
